The 5 Best Exercises to Get Rid of Cellulite

If you're one of the 90% of women who suffer from cellulite, it can seem like an almost constant battle to get rid of the dreaded dimples. There are many treatments and remedies on the market that say they can help with the problem, but one of the best cures for cellulite is 100% natural and free - exercise.
Cellulite is caused when toxins, excess fluid and fat build up just underneath the skin layer, stretching and pulling at the connective tissue, which is what gives cellulite its dimpled look. Exercise can help for a number of reasons. Getting your heart rate going a few times a week will help speed up the body's metabolism and get oxygenated blood flowing to the affected area. This will help it handle the excess fat and toxins in the body, getting rid of them instead of adding them to your cellulite problem, and provide the nutrients needed to improve the condition of your skin.

Aerobic exercise is great, but you could see an even greater improvement with muscle-strengthening exercises that focus on toning up the areas that have cellulite. Exercising the muscles will give you better definition as well as help to shift the excess fat. Women who regularly follow a plan with aerobic and toning exercises can see a significant improvement in their cellulite over those who rely on aerobic exercise alone. Here are 5 of the best toning exercises for the part of the body most women struggle with, their thighs.

Squats - These are simple, but very effective for working the back of the thigh. Start by standing up with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-length apart. Then slowly squat down until your upper legs are parallel to floor, or as low as you can comfortably get, hold it for a couple of seconds, and then rise back up to a standing position. To begin with, 4 or 5 of these a day is probably enough, and then you can gradually start to increase this when your muscles get used to the exercise. You can also use the back of a chair, or a rail if you are at the gym, should you need a little support.

Steps - Steps are another good way for working and toning the back of the thighs. Either using your stairs at home or one of the specially designed gym steps, and keeping your back straight, simply step up with one foot, then the other, and then step down the same way. If your foot lands flat at the top of each step, this will work the back of the thighs and the buttocks. But for a little extra work out, just using the balls of your feet when you step up, will help tone your calves as well. This is a little harder and might be something you want to build up to.
Leg Raises - Leg raises are another great way of exercising the back of the thighs and the buttocks. Starting out on the floor, resting on your knees and elbows, you want to slowly lift one leg off the floor, and then straighten it and raise it away from the floor until it is pointing into the air. Hold for a second and then slowly bring it back down to the original position, then do the same with the other leg. This exercise can really work the muscles so, again, start with 4 or 5 of these a day, and then gradually increase the number as your strength improves.

Side Leg Raises - These are similar to the last exercise, but done standing up, and they're designed to work the outer thigh muscles. Holding onto the back of a chair or a rail for balance, you want to keep your leg straight and raise it out to the side as far as it will go. Hold it for a second, and then lower it back down. Repeat this as many times as you feel comfortable, but don't over-do it, especially if you are just starting your new exercise regime. Once you've done one leg, do the same for the other.
Inner Thigh Squeeze - For this exercise you are going to need a chair and a cushion, pillow, or even a folded up bath towel. Sit on the chair with your back straight, and place the pillow between your thighs, using them to grip it gently. Now squeeze the pillow with your thighs for a couple of seconds, and then relax. Repeat this as many times as you are comfortable with, but not too many to start with. This gives the inner thigh muscles a really good workout, helping to give you better definition.

As well as the exercises above, you can also get the beneficial combination of aerobic and toning exercises from swimming, cycling, walking and jogging, and even fun, modern exercises like kick-boxing. It has been shown that women who do toning exercises as well as general aerobic exercise are likely to see a greater improvement in the appearance of their cellulite. This combination approach to fighting cellulite doesn't stop there either. Getting the blood flowing and slightly increasing your body temperature means the effect of any anti-cellulite creams you use will increase as well. Applying these creams after exercise will help tone the upper layers of the skin, and your warmer body temperature means they could be more easily absorbed into the deeper layers of the skin, where they will be even more effective.

Pectin and Weight Loss - What's the Connection?

Pectin is a soluble fiber that is naturally found in many fruits. It is most richly found in apples, strawberries, grapes, grapefruits, lemons, oranges, and tangerines, among others. Recently, it's been receiving good press for its weight reduction benefits, which are caused by its ability to make you feel full and to keep blood sugar and insulin levels steady. To top it off, pectin also has low fat and calorie content.

Ironically despite the general wisdom that eating fresh fruit is best, pectin is easier to digest when apple are cooked, giving that nice almost jelly like texture to the apple sauce. The pectin comes out of the fruit cells when cooked making it more bio available in this state. Therefore it is good to mix cooked and uncooked fruit in the diet.

To understand how pectin helps bring about weight loss, you first need to understand what makes people fat. The first culprit is excessive eating, or eating more than your body can burn. Pectin, however, can create the feeling of fullness and can therefore slow down and decrease your food consumption. This gives your body enough time to burn all the calories that need to be burned before new calories come in.
Pectin can also regulate your insulin levels. Since higher insulin levels lead to increased body fat, pectin helps keep fat controlled by keeping your insulin levels in check.

However, studies also showed that the effectiveness of pectin decreases if it is consumed together with a lot of high-fat foods, which goes for many nutrients. High fat should be avoided anyway when trying to lose weight.

Pectin is most richly found in natural fruits, but most of it is removed when fruits are processed into juices, the pulp left behind is high in pectin and is often used to extract pectin powder that is then used as a vegetarian alternative to gelatin. Also, to get as much pectin for your body to enjoy its weight loss benefits, you'll need to eat plenty of pectin-rich fruits every day, such as apples, pears and cooked fruits.
But with most diets it's hard to stick to eating fruit all the time, people have busy lives and don't always have the time to go out buy and prepare fruit, let alone boil it up.

Thus, to help you get more pectin without getting tired of eating fruits, you can also take weight loss supplements that contain pectin. Pectin weight loss supplements are now widely available.

Most Weight Loss Programs and Diets Fall Short in Their Claims for Long Term Weight Loss

Losing weight is such an individual journey. There are many programs, diets and quick fix solutions constantly bombarding us that work for some individual and unfortunately not for others.

Psychology, nutritional science programs and exercise are the key components of weight loss and not a magic pill, specialized diet or some home remedy.

Psychologically, individuals must examine the choices they are making that dis-empower themselves. Identifying an issue is the key that can open the door to freedom, and rediscovering self-esteem can provide the strength to walk through.

Obtaining nutritional information from family, friends and internet can be a very daunting experience and often leads to paralysis. Nutritional science programs are based on clinical research; they provide the best insight and clarity to the nutritional murkiness that surrounds us. What to eat and when to eat are very crucial for a successful weight loss experience.

The thought of exercise causes some people to cringe. Some people expend more energy in creating a distraction to avoid exercising then just exercising. What people fail to realize is that their metabolism slows down with age and exercising revitalizes the mind and body helping its metabolic rate. Only 30 minutes a day of physical activity that gets the heart pumping, the lungs expanding and the skin sweating will rejuvenate anyone's metabolic rate providing increased stamina and an overall feeling of well-being.

The synergistic culmination of these three areas awakens the body's natural ability to experience true health and wellness. I challenge you to look within and make better choices for a better quality of life; you deserve it.

Weight Loss - Hair Loss - Is There a Link Between Weight Loss and Hair Loss

There are various causes of hair loss and there is a question about the connection if there is one, between weight loss and hair loss. Understanding weight loss especially extreme weight loss or crash dieting is important when attempting to answer this question.

Weight Reduction

Most people have at some point in their lives wanted to or needed to lose weight. A healthy diet and exercise are the best ways to achieve weight loss though it may take longer than you want it to. In order to effectively lose weight, your body must burn more calories (units of energy) than it consumes.
Extreme weight loss through illness, eating disorders, or crash dieting is not a good way to go. Illness cannot be helped and when recovered the weight you lost may come back. With eating disorders or crash diets extreme amounts of weight is dropped in a short period of time.

This extreme weight loss is usually achieved through severely limiting food intake often at the expense of your health. In such cases there may be a loss of essential vitamins and minerals needed for good health including weight. These deficiencies are likely to be B vitamins especially B6, Biotin, and Niacin, as well as minerals including magnesium and sulfur. These can all be found in foods especially in fruits and in vegetables. Low iron in the blood may also be linked to hair loss. Iron rich foods include red meats, beans, dried fruits, and many cereals. A multi-vitamin with iron may be needed to replenish what the body has lost.
A physical exam and knowledge of the ideal weight for your height will let you and your doctor know whether you are too thin to be healthy. Once illnesses go away or eating disorders are stabilized hair quality may return or at least improve.

Hair Loss

Hair loss can be caused by heredity, illness, stress, or trauma. Medications may also play a part in hair loss. Typically once recovered hair may return to normal or improve. When medications such as chemo treatments are stopped you will experience new growth over time. The quality and color may change as it comes back.
Treatments can include something as simple as hairstyle changes, eating healthier, and exercising. Topical treatments are applied directly to the scalp. Finasteride and minoxidil are the two FDA approved treatments that achieve results. Oral medications including anti-inflammatories and anti-depressants might also be used to relieve conditions that are causing hair loss including scalp irritations and reduce the effects of stress.

The Link

Extreme weight loss such as that which results from eating disorders and crash dieting will likely rob the body of the vitamins and minerals necessary for over-all good health and specifically healthy hair. Once these things are replaced your hair's condition will likely improve.

Conclusion

Weight problems especially extreme weight loss may rob the body of what it needs to maintain healthy hair. While there are other causes for hair loss weight loss is a potentially dangerous cause. Without proper nutrients your body will not function as it should. Once restored to normal levels your over-all health and the condition of your hair will likely improve. If you have lost extreme amounts of weight a physical will help to rule out other causes. There are treatments available for weight loss and hair loss. Your doctor can be your best asset in getting back into good health.
